The seminar studies the upper segments of society by focusing on the following questions: Does a ruling class exist? What is the relation between elites and domination? Do the elites occupy the most powerful positions in society? How can elites be defined? These questions will be developed by reading several classics of elite theory. Against this background, the seminar will try to understand the contemporary configuration of upper classes and study aspects of them empirically. In the course of the semester, students are expected to come up with a meaningful research question concerning elites and ruling classes and to carry out a small study, which they will present at the end of the semester.
