New York City is known both as a microcosm of the United States, and as unlike any other part of the country. Both of these observations might be due to the social and cultural diversity that has characterized the city throughout its (recorded) history. After having a look at this history and some classic examples of New York literature, we will discuss selected works that address different facets of contemporary life in this urban space. Authors whose texts will be analysed include Paul Auster, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Leslie Feinberg, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Colson Whitehead. Requirements for credit include regular attendance, as well as participation in class discussions and the introduction of one specific text. |
