The aim of this course is to critically discuss classical and contemporary theories of “race” and ethnicity. This course is divided into three parts: In the first part of the course, we discuss conceptualization of “race” and ethnicity, Europe and North America in comparison. In the second part of the course, we delve into the discussions that intersect with ethnicity, “race”, gender and class. In the third part, we discuss “race”, racisms and racialization processes, such as everyday racism and Whiteness. As complementary subjects to “race” and ethnicity, we also explore nations and national projects, transnationalism and multiculturalism. The students are expected to have a comprehensive understanding on theories of “race” and ethnicity while completing this course. They also should be able to discuss controversial discussions on these theories with their own critical perspectives. |
