This course is dedicated to narratives of development in 19th- and 20th-century English literature. The range of texts will provide ample opportunity to discuss a range of related genres (novel of development, Bildungsroman, Female Bildungsroman, Black Bildungsroman) and reflect the cultural and historical contexts of their emergence. Furthermore, we will deal with concepts of identity and questions of narratology particular to this type of narrative. Part of this module will serve a propaedeutic function and help students to bring their knowledge of the basics of literary analysis and academic proficiency up to standard (if necessary).
