This seminar provides an introduction to the study of social movements. We probe the heuristic merits of different theoretical perspectives and concepts. Moreover, we explore the conditions under which social movements emerge, express grievances, articulate demands, and make history. Relations between contentious dynamics on local, regional, national, and global levels will be studied. Due to the nature of the course students are expected to conduct research on a social movement and present the result in the class. |
