– Addressing ethnic, racial, and gender diversity in the modern language classroom – Taking Berlin’s Rahmenlehrplan English in Sek I and Sek II as a vantage point, students will explore curricular guidelines for the analysis and discussion of ethnic and racial diversity as well as issues of gender identity in the English-speaking world. In how far are these topics touched in textbooks of the years 7 to 10? How can language instruction be combined with raising pupils’ awareness and appreciation of cultural and ethnic diversity, gender roles and gender identities? How important are these topics in Sek II? Which media lend themselves to addressing these issues and how can teachers employ them effectively? How can we use thematic aspects of racial diversity and gender relations to teach media competency? These are some of the questions this seminar aims to address, and many more will arise and be discussed as students contribute their own ideas and viewpoints on these issues. |
