Four novels will be examined with a view to addressing the complexities of Black British identity in contemporary Britain. Especial attention will be paid to literary representations of gender and race as well as community relations. Additional salient themes will include the concepts of diaspora, space, memory, histories of travel (physical and metaphorical), cultural hybridity as well as integration into mainstream contexts. Presentations will be a required part of the class. A reader will be made available. Students are required to have acquired the novels and read them before the class takes place.
