Labor is a central tool for understanding major developments in modern African history. This seminar will address aspects such as the transition from slave labor to other forms of labor, the emergence of wage labor, the role of labor associations, child labor, labor migration, the short summer of the welfare state in Africa and the invention of 'informal' labor. We will also discuss to what extent a global perspective might help to better frame and understand these issues.
