Nothing teaches insights into the nature of a language better than studying it in a contrastive manner. Practical translation exercises, analyzing and comparing translations will therefore heighten students' awareness of key differences between German and English language patterns, style conventions and text strategies. Students are also introduced to various translation tools to help develop and apply successful translation strategies. The course is mainly aimed at American Studies students; exchange students welcome if there are places available. The course assumes functional German competence in writing. Credits require completion of several short written assignments and one final translation task.
