This course seeks to explore the role of „Asia“ in Global History from a twofold perspective. On one hand we will examine the methodological impact, which scholars from “Asia” have on the writing and approaches of Global History. On the other hand we will ask how the role of “Asia” in globalizing processes and interconnections is depicted and discussed in historiography. Thereby we periodically will focus on the transformations from the 17th to the 20th century. Doing so also the term “Asia”, its regional definition and its use in Global History will be discussed. Special knowledge in the field of Asian History is not required.
