Seminar „Earth as a Complex System“ Tuesday 9-11, weekly, Room 1.101 (RUD26)
Goals, topics: Complementary to the lecture, the seminar elaborates on core ideas and current research on Earth as a dynamic, coevolving system of human societies and their environment. Selected literature on the following topics will presented and discussed. - Perception of natural disasters in historical times
- History of science of the Anthropocene
- Key findings from the newest IPCC assessment
- Planetary boundary for freshwater consumption
- Planetary boundaries for land use (as linked to water use)
- Concepts of social-ecological metabolism and resilience
- Functions of global environmental scenarios
- Water ethics and conflicts in the Anthropocene
- Roles of culture and religion in global environmental change
Requirements and organisation: Participation in the parallel lecture (Prof. Lucht, Tue. 11–13). Examination and summary of relevant literature in an oral presentation (max. 20 min. plus self-moderated discussion). The MAP requires an additional written exam on topics of both seminar and lecture. The topic of your talk will be assigned, and recommended literature provided, in the first session on 15 Oct. The seminar will be held in English; students may choose to give their talk in German. |
