Berlin: a city of alternative lifestyles, the home of techno music, laid-back house squatting and artistic innovation? Poor but sexy? Maybe. This seminar will trace the cultural history of Berlin’s rich and diverse subcultural life after World War II – on both sides of the Wall and after reunification. Additionally, students will engage with key concepts of subcultural theory as well as the various social functions, identity politics and aesthetic concepts of subcultural practice. Students are encouraged to introduce further subcultures into the discussion (e.g. Goth, Steampunk, gender discourse) and explore Berlin’s subcultural scenes for their coursework. There will be a special focus on improving students’ German language skills. |
