Both in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as since the late 1970s there have been important reform movements within Islam. This reform was on the one hand driven by the desire to return to more orthodoxy on the level of ideas and practices but also a response to changed circumstances. Around the 1900s the major contextual factors were colonialism and the rise of nationalism, nowadays these are modernisation as well as globalisation. It is within these parameters that we will study a number of key texts on both South and Southeast Asia, undertaking a critical comparison between areas and periods with the aim of better understanding what 'Islamic reform' means. Course requirements: oral presentation and active participation in class discussions. |
