44 million people worldwide are on the run. A third of today’s UNHCR-assisted refugees live in refugee camps managed by international organizations. Refugee camps shape the history of the global South - not only temporarily but permanently. As the sociologist Katharina Inhetveen put it, they are today, "the world's dominant form in which refugees are officially administrated, sheltered, and fed”. Based on current research literature and grey literature of humanitarian organizations, this seminar will analyze discourses and practices of this peculiar technique of managing populations of the global South. |
