Computer games, television and cinema are the media which influence American youngsters most! In this class we will explore what this means for gender images and stereotypes, namely the ideas about femininity, masculinity and genderbending. Before we look at concrete examples from recent American Hollywood movies, we will have a look at key concepts of gender theories and at recent descriptions of the meaning of "womanhood", "femininity", "manhood" and "masculinity". We will then discuss the problematics of several movies: Thelma & Louise (1991), American Beauty (1999), Fight Club (1999), Boys Don't Cry (1999), The Stepford Wives (2004), Brokeback Mountain (2005).Reading: A Reader with various texts will be available at "Sprintout", Georgenstraße, S-Bahn Bogen 190 at the beginning of October.Requirements: For the class: short presentation. For the modul: BA Amerikanistik students (StO 2003) have to write a term paper (20 pages) or do an oral exam of 30 min (in alternation with Modul 7). |
