Discourse Representation Theory (DRT) is a theoretical framework which extends classical formal semantics to deal with issues such as anaphora and sequence of tense in texts. DRT posits that sentence and discourse meaning is interpreted using abstract mental representations, and offers a way of constructing and depicting these representations. The course will begin with a gentle introduction to some basic notions of logic and formal semantics, and then introduce DRT. Over the semester, we will examine DRT's treatment of negation, disjunction and conjunction, and other semantic phenomena. The course will include weekly homework assignments. Ideally, students should have previously attended an introductory semantics course. |
