What role do gender and sexuality play in the learning and teaching of English as a foreign language? In Germany, very little attention has been paid so far to issues related to gender in the language classroom – a neglect that allows a firm belief in a binary gender system, essentialist conceptions of maleness and femaleness, as well as the marginalization of non-normative gender and sexual identities to remain largely unquestioned in language teaching theory and practice. In this seminar we will attempt to link Gender Studies with foreign language didactics by investigating cultural constructions of gender as it intersects with sexuality in various fields of language education. We will analyze gender constructions in curricula, textbooks, and foreign language didactics, explore Gender Studies as a topical area in foreign language classrooms and in teacher education, get to know approaches that attempt to tackle sexism and heteronormativity resp. homo- and transphobia in EFL teaching. Finally, participants will work on tasks for the English classroom that have the potential of offering learning experiences with regard to notions of gender and sexuality which can facilitate the development of reflective self concepts and emancipated personalities of language learners. A course syllabus as well as required primary and secondary literature will be provided in a Moodle course under www.moodle.hu-berlin.de. |
