The course starts with a theoretical introduction into “Yidishland” – the virtual home of homeless Eastern Jews, which provides a linguistic, cultural, social and demographic laboratory for modern interdisciplinary research within the humanities. Among the topics covered in the first part of the course will be the following: 1) Yidishland: an attempt of a definition, 2) The science of Jewry, 3) Slavic or German: controversies in the determination of the Eastern Jewry’s origin, 4) Identity and language, and 5) Topographies. The second part of the course will tread the position of Jews and their role in the Communist East Central Europe. In order to understand the different methodological approaches and often antithetic theses, the course will analyze this topic from three different perspectives: 1) The “Jewish Question” played an important role in the Communist propaganda. 2) The role of the left-wing political parties among parts of the Jewish population will be discussed. 3) The perspective of daily life of Jews in Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary will be in focus of the course (emigration, restitution problems, reconstruction of Jewish communities). Das Seminar ist Bestandteil des Višegrad-Programms (VIŠEGRAD UNIVERSITY STUDIES GRANT), das den einwöchigen Aufenthalt des jeweiligen Dozenten/der jeweiligen Dozentin ermöglicht. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein vom Institut der Slawistik eingeworbenes Zwei-Jahres-Programm, in dessen Verlauf pro Semester zwei Dozenten/Dozentinnen aus Mitteleuropa an der HU Berlin lehren werden.
