Demographic change and rising social inequality put intergenerational relations at the center of political and public debate. To what extent do children move up or down the social structure compared to their parents? Which forms of solidarity and transfers do we see between grandparents, parents and children across the life course? This course brings together perspectives from life course sociology, social inequality research and family demography to examine intergenerational relations across the life course. The course begins with an introduction to the life course paradigm and stratification research. We will continue to review theoretical explanations and empirical findings on social mobility, multigenerational mobility, the intergenerational transmission of health and family behavior, as well as intergenerational solidarity. |
