The course discusses differences between varieties of English used by native speakers around the world, extending material covered in the lecture in Module 4. The seminar devotes special attention to the Southern Hemisphere varieties (Australian, New Zealand, South African English), but also covers the most important aspects of variation in English in the British Isles and North America. The seminar will not only acquaint participants with the descriptive details of the varieties of English covered, but also emphasise general linguistic principles of relevance beyond the specific varieties and phenomena discussed. |
