The seminar covers the most important areas of English phonetics and phonology. After revision of the material covered in Module 1 regarding basic notions of phonetics and phonology and the details of the articulation of the sounds of English, topics treated include phonological processes, syllables and other prosodic domains, suprasegmentals (e.g. stress, intonation), interactions between phonology and other areas of grammar (morphology, syntax) and selected aspects of historical phonology. In some parts of the course we will discuss contrasts between different varieties of English and between English and German. Particular attention will be paid to practical problems of (teaching) English pronunciation. |
