Mark Mazower has recently argued that “for the past 200 years, Greece has been at the forefront of Europe’s evolution.” Echoing this approach, this course aims at demonstrating that it is highly problematic to portray Greece as an isolated case-study or to seek a Greek “Sonderweg.” Therefore, it focuses on Greece during the 20th century, approaching it from the perspective of transfer and comparative history. The syllabus probes the ways in which Greece was involved in major developments that marked the 20th century, especially World War I and II, the European integration as well as the Cold War and its aftermath. Furthermore, it analyses a plethora of transfers among Greece and other European countries, including the domains of migration, tourism, the postwar international youth culture, political/diplomatic networks and economic investment. In scrutinising these issues, the course will question the suggested dichotomy between the “centre” and the “periphery” of Europe, which is predominant in theoretical conceptualisations from the perspective of sociology and political science. |
