This course aims at introducing students to a variety of scholarly discourses and concepts used for the analysis of American culture. It focuses on different media and forms of cultural representation and studies the responses to these sources by scholars of American Studies with different theoretical backgrounds. Addressed are theories
such as Structuralism, Deconstruction, Gender Studies, Visual Studies, Whiteness Studies, Marxism, Critical Race Theory and Border Studies, etc. The students are encouraged to reflect critically on the ways these
theories are engaged in the production and ascription of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and other categories.
The course registration is via AGNES. The number of participants is limited to 30 per course.
Reading:
• There will be a reader with texts to be discussed in class at
Sprintout (S-Bögen) by April 1st. A good introduction to the topic is
Neil Campbell and Alasdair Kean's American Cultural Studies. London:
Routledge, 2006.
Requirements:
The requirement for the class is presence and participation. For the MAP
you will have to answer a few essay questions pertaining to this class. |
