Das Seminar bietet einen Einstieg in zentrale Debatten afrikanischischer politischer Philosophie. Als relevante Themenbereiche konzentrieren wir uns auf die vier Felder Demokratie, Geschlechterverhältnisse, Menschenrechte und Armut. Propädeutisch möchten wir die Gegenüberstellung von "Africa and the Rest" kritisch diskutieren, dem Spannungsverhältnis zwischen kollektiver und individueller Emanzipation in den einzelnen Feldern nachgehen und die Frage nach intellektueller Dekolonisierung politiktheoretischer Narrative gemeinsam stellen. Idealer Weise entsteht gegen Ende des Seminars ein vielschichtiges Fundament, auf dem die weitere Bearbeitung globaler Herausforderungen aufbauen kann.
Vorausgesetzt werden die Fähigkeit zur eigenständigen Lektüre englischsprachiger Texte und ein Grundlagenwissen über die Geschichte des afrikanischen Kontinents seit 1919. Das Seminar wird als Blockveranstaltungen an zwei Wochenenden (Fr.-So.) im Januar und Februar angeboten. Über das HU-Moodle werden wir uns im Vorfeld von Vorlesungsbeginn an gemeinsame Lektürefragen erarbeiten.
The seminar offers an introduction to central themes in the philosophical debates within contemporary African poltical philosophy. We will concentrate on four main topics, which are democracy, gender, human rights and poverty. As preliminary reflections, we need to discuss the dichotomization of "Africa and the Rest", the tension between collective and individual emancipation in each respective field as well as the idea of intellectual decolonization of political philosophy. Hopefully, this seminar will lay bare a multilayered foundation, that allows to work for new theoretical insights in how to approach pressing global challenges.
We expect participants to be able to work with texts written in English and to have a basic knowledge on the history of the African continent from 1919 onwards. The seminar is organized en bloque at two weekends (Fr.-Sun.) in January and February. We will regularly debate questions to the texts beforehand on the HU-Moodle platform starting in October. |
