This class represents an introduction to linguistics with a special focus on African languages. It will cover the core domains of grammatical description such as phonology, morphology and syntax, and explain basic terminology. Comparing the structural differences between languages already known to the students (English, German) and African languages will give an insight into the capacities of the human mind. In addition, we will get to know methods and fields of application of linguistics, especially in the African context. By the end of the semester, participants will have a solid basis for going deeper into linguistic studies – and/or have learned what non-linguists might want to know about linguistics. |
