This course focuses on students who prepare for their final examination in Northern Sotho. Grammatical knowledge is deepened in the first 2 contact students through formal lectures. In these lectures we want to achieve some evidence of grammatical accuracy in subject-verb agreement, noun-adjective agreement, positive and negative forms, possessive pronouns, as well as active and passive forms of the verb. Students start to read and to translate longer texts out, and into Northern Sotho. Students are expected to write letters and short essays comprising different themes. The other 2 contact hours are used to improve listening and communication skills through audio stimuli as the students are exposed to songs, poems and short stories. Dialogues, short narrations and mock situations are used to achieve the correct articulation and to improve basic communication skills. Active communication is practiced in groups as well as through individual presentations or role-play. A mother-tongue speaker is available for 2 additional hours per week to read and translate Northern Sotho texts with students. The course is concluded with an oral examination. |
