N’ko, Kpelle, Vai, u.a.) thematisiert. It is usually claimed that there was no independent development of writing systems in Africa (except Egypt). But there have been and still are a number of indigenous writing systems which were developed in different parts and regions of the continent. In this course we will first deal with the theoretical aspects of graphic representation of the sound systems of languages. Then we will look at the history and use of a number of ancient writing systems (such as Meroitic, Nubian, Tifinagh). We will in particular examine the case of the Ethiopic writing system (Ge’ez, Amharic, Tigrinya) and look also at more recently developed scripts in Westafrica such as N’ko, Kpelle, Vai and others.
