"Understanding, Explaining, and Describing a Nation: The U.S. reflected in Literature, the Media, the Arts and in Public Diplomacy." How does one explain a nation, (a) culture(s), national characteristics? How is “America’s” story being told? This course will concentrate on depictions of the U.S. in literature and the press, in architecture and in the arts, analyze views from a national and a transnational perspective, and take a closer look at how official policy conveys a national image based on national interest. In addition to regular classes, students are asked to attend a few guest lectures and be somewhat flexible in their schedules. Registration: via e-mail at KohlM@state.gov Requirements Students are required to deliver short presentations during the semester based on readings and write an essay on a topic of their choice (details will follow at the beginning of the semester). |
