The seminar introduces the development of American and Canadian documentary film from the silent film era to the recent “new” popularity of the documentary (e.g. Michael Moore, Al Gore, “mockumentaries”), and the theory of documentary film. After general readings in the history and theory of the documentary, we will concentrate on the following topics: Ethnographic Film, Direct Cinema, Feminist Documentary Films, Ethnicity, Migration and Globalization in Documentary Films. Some of the films that we will discuss in class will be available at Mediathek (Dorotheenstr.) for individual use. Additional film screenings will take place after class (between 2 and 4 pm). A reader will be available for purchase. Please use AGNES for enrollment. |
