This seminar offers an introduction to Minimalism, the current version of Generative Grammar. Setting out from basic notions of syntax (e.g., grammatical categories and constituent structure), we will investigate phenomena like binding of pronouns, negation, and yes/no- and wh-questions. The examples we are going to discuss are taken from Standard English and some of its varieties (Early Modern English, Jamaican Creole, Belfast English). As a textbook, we use Andrew Radford's book Syntactic Theory and the Structure of English: A Minimalist Approach. There will be regular exercises in which the concepts and notions of Minimalism will be applied to concrete data. |
