This is a course in German-English translation for non-native speakers of English. There is a strong comparative focus with emphasis on key differences between German and English as to structure, grammar and vocabulary. We will use a mix of authentic texts from a wide range of cultural, academic and literary areas and specific exercises that highlight and practice typical difficulties in German-English translation. We will also touch upon practical approaches to "real-life" translation. One major aim is to increase students' ability to make effective and smart use of the tools available. Another aim is to make students aware of typical language patterns to avoid mistakes. Translation will generally have to be prepared at home but there will be plenty of opportunity for translation in class. Please use the registration form to register for the course by 25 March |
