Since its publication in 1814 historical fiction has remained immensely popular until today. To be sure, Scott`s original model of the historical novel has been substantially changed by writers of later generations due to changes in their conceptualization of history and the novel. This seminar investigates the genesis of historical fiction in the early 19th century and traces some of the generic innovations during the 19th and early 20th centuries. We will examine the writers concept of history as well as their implications for the narrative structures of their texts. Participants are expected to have read the following novels before the semester as there will be a considerable amount of further reading during the term: Walter Scott, Waverley (1814) and Ivanhoe (1819). |
