In an era of global flows of ideas and information, commodities, and people, education is particularly impacted by global transformations that challenge national systems of education, their functions and formats and the underlying ideologies of knowledge production in various ways. At the backdrop of major debates on and reforms in American education since the 1980s the course explores how global transformations have influenced concepts and models of school and higher education in the United States in terms of the production and distribution of knowledge in the 21st century. Topics the course addresses include new national educational strategies, cultures and policies of international and transnational education, continuities and discontinuities in curricular development pertaining to aspects such as social equity, race, gender, and social class. Finally, the discussion will also shed light on the similarities and dissimilarities of these processes and developments in a transatlantic context. A course reader will be made availabe at Sprintout Copyshop (located at the corner of Georgenstraße/Universitätsstraße) at the beginning of April. Course requirements include regular attendance, active participation in the discussion both in class and on Moodle, one in-class presentation and a final paper. |
