In this course students will take a critical look at conventional methods of assessment in foreign language education and consider traditional definitions of 'grammatical' competence and L2 'knowledge' in testing and how such definitions may need to be extended to allow for learner-related factors. The course will examine how errors made by pupils during spoken and written forms of testing may be influenced by variables such as interlanguage development, and more crucially by strategic competence linked to task type and test format. Key concepts throughout the course will be validity and reliability in language testing. Final assessment will take the form of a 90-minute 'Klausur' involving linguistic and didactic analysis of pupil errors made during a written test. Maximal 15 Teilnehmer.
