Schultze Do 8-10: Communicative language teaching
In the last decades, no approach to language teaching has influenced textbooks, classrooms and curricula of contemporary foreign language education more than the communicative approach. But why and how exactly are we supposed to increase our students' "communicative competence"? In this course we are going to investigate the conceptual and methodological framework of communicative language teaching and put selected communicative classroom activities to the test. Further information on course schedule and bibliography will be provided on a Moodle platform at the beginning of the term. Beschreibung für den Kurs Dr. Anne Mihan: Fr 14-16: “What do we teach? Approaching Values in the EFL Classroom” In the wake of the “PISA shock” of 2003, educators and administrators in the German school sector have been engaged in heated discussions about where the focus in foreign language tuition should lie and what competences students ought to acquire in the course of learning a foreign language at school. A resulting move toward output orientation and standardization has brought changes to curricula which critics bemoan as a turning away from prized educational goals that view the learning of a foreign language as an integral part of the Humboldtian ideal of ‘Bildung’ as a formative, potentially enlightening process. In our seminar we will enquire about the purpose(s) of teaching a foreign language; we will discuss and try out examples of value-conscious and value-oriented education that are adaptable to the EFL classroom. A course syllabus as well as required primary and secondary literature will be provided in a Moodle course under www.moodle.hu-berlin.de and – if needed – in a reader at the Sprintout copy shop in Georgenstraße/Universitätsstraße.
