The course is concerned with major phonetic and phonological aspects of the English language. Thus English speech sounds are classified and described with respect to their articulatory and acoustic features. In addition, starting from the basic concepts and theories of phonology, English phonemes are investigated with regard to their patterns (phonemic inventory, phonotactic rules) and their allophonic variation. The course also takes a look at aspects of contrastive phonology (English-German). Furthermore, it deals with prosodic features of English, such as rhythm, stress and intonation. This includes the quasi-phonological organisation of English intonation. Students familiarise themselves with phonetic transcription and the notation of intonation. |
