(S. Selvon, „The Lonely Londoners“). Coming to England after having imagined it innumerable times will be a key topic in the texts we will be exploring. Writers and/or characters coming from Trinidad, Nigeria, Southafrica, India, Scotland or South Germany have explored moments of puzzlement, fear, nostalgia, dreams and misunderstanding on arriving in „Brit’n“. What happens to the minds, souls and bodies of people who, for various reasons, have left their home-countries? We will touch upon diverse issues, such as postcolonial identity, Englishness, migration and its effect on narrative. Moreover, we will explore the imagined and literary topographies of London, Manchester or rural England, the unexpected, delayed or failed arrivals and departures as well the hovering between different languages in different genres. Participants are required to write one or two short essays and to give a short presentation in class. A reader will be available at the beginning of the semester.
