Film-Analysis: Introduction to the history, theory and methodology of American Film

This course is an introduction to film studies including the teaching of film studies in a BA-environment. We will look at some of the major steps in the devlopment of American cinema; we will discuss influential film theories by David Bordwell, Christian Metz, Siegfried Kracauer, Jean-Louis Baudry, Laura Mulvey; and we will have a look at basic filmic techniques such as image and shot, perspective, camera movement, lighting, color and sound, editing, film narratology and semiotics. Students will have to prepare and present one "chapter" of American film history.

Reading:

·        A reader with the theoretical texts will be available by April at "Sprintout", Georgenstraße, S-Bahn Bogen 190.

·        Apart from the theoretical texts we will be working with Richard Barsam, Looking at Movies, New York: Norton, 2010. Excerpts from the book will be included in the reader. Tutors will work with this book and its DVD tutorials next semester.

Course Requirements:

Participation and short presentations on American film history. For the entire module (6): teaching report (on your experience in a tutorial) or self-study journal (please consult with the instructor).
