Urban agriculture and horticulture is becoming a new movement in metropolitan areas. People from the neighbourhood are creating their own spaces for activities and communication. These communal gardens have emerged in metropolitan centres like New York in USA or Berlin (Europe) as well as in Latin American and in many African countries. In some parts of the world urban agriculture and horticulture is part of the survival strategies that help to cope with food and meal security. We will learn how these new communal initiatives are shaping the every life of people, where especially women get involved. These grass root movements are highly gendered and we will learn about the historical development of horticultural societies, where mostly women have taken the responsibility of land cultivation. Even until today women’s share in field work is about 80% in Sub-Saharian countries. As urban agriculture is becoming part of new city life, students are welcomed to do their own research and investigate in topics of their choice. They can follow the roots of the German ‘Schrebergärten’ or the ‘community gardens’ or intercultural gardens in Berlin. The Seminar will be offered with Moodle. |
