In his famous work „How to do things with words“, John L. Austin argues that some utterances equal actions and therefore names them speech acts. In this seminar, we first want to discuss Austin’s work in detail, before we look at John Searle’s theory that includes a model for the description of single speech acts. During the discussion of these two theories, we will get to know important notions, such as indirect speech acts or the distinctions between performatives and constatives, locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary acts, as well as explicit and implicit speech acts.In the second half of the semester, we will have a closer look on the relationship between sentence types and speech acts, and compare the patterns found in English with those in other languages. The requirements for this seminar include regular attendance, reading the text under discussion for each session and occasional homework. The seminar will be accompanied by a Moodle course where the texts to be read are made available. |
