This seminar is designed to provide an overview of significant genres, themes, authors, and texts pertaining to what is commonly called Romanticism. We shall study a variety of texts ranging from political essays in the context of the French revolution (Mary Wollstonecraft) and gothic (science) fiction (Mary Shelley) to programmatic poetological texts and canonical poetry by the six big names (Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelly, Byron), investigating such diverse critical issues as Romantic subjectivity, the concept of the imagination, the politics of the Romantic engagement with nature, and the gendering of authorship. Virtually all required primary reading for this seminar plus lots of additional material is included in Duncan Wu's seminal anthology Romanticism. An Anthology (Blackwell Anthologies) .
