The sonnet has remained one of the most productive poetic forms since the early modern period - in spite of or perhaps because of the manifold modifications of its original structure and themes. The seminar explores the origin of this poetic form and traces its evolution from its Italian origin. We will discuss its manifaceted development from the Early Modern period to the Romantic and Victorian, and investigate its popularity among writers who served in the First World War and among contemporary poets.A reader with all the texts will be available at the beginning of the semester. |
