Whether in Antiquity, during the Middle Ages, or in the Renaissance, travelers appear to have always felt the need to document their experiences abroad. The aim of this course is to provide an overview of different kinds of travel writing, from medieval travelers’ accounts of their pilgrimages (or their participation in the Crusades, for that matter) via John Mandeville’s Travels (1356) to the Renaissance exploration of the New World. The focus will be chiefly on the various types of narratives writers have chosen to report on their travel experiences and the ways in which these authors contextualize cultural otherness. A list of primary and secondary readings will be available in early March; please contact me by email in order to obtain the Moodle password. |
