In this course, the students will learn how to conduct linguistic fieldwork. We will start by learning about different goals of linguistic fieldwork, such as language documentation and data collection for a specific study. We will then simulate the entire process of linguistic fieldwork hands on, from practical considerations to linguistic analysis. On the practical side, we will focus on methods of collecting and analyzing the data (including linguistic software programs), ethical and local considerations, as well as working with the existing archived collections of linguistic data of underdescribed languages. Students will put this knowledge into practice and create research hypotheses for a given language, choose an appropriate method of testing it through data collection or analysis of pre-existing collections, and analyze the results.
