This X-Student Research Group explores argumentative strategies in early Chinese philosophy. We will begin by studying and reflecting on philosophical issues in the three main schools of thought – Confucianism, Mohism and Daoism. On this basis, we will delve into philosophical arguments from these schools, chosen by the students according to their interests. By contextualising and reconstructing these arguments, participants will gain insights into different forms of reasoning, new concepts (e.g. dào 道, dé 德) and alternative philosophical formats (e.g. dialogue, parable). At the end, we will transfer our findings by designing and producing our own Chinese philosophy podcast. The research project is suitable for both advanced Bachelor’s and Master’s students. Participants must have an interest in philosophical argumentation and in working with podcasts. Previous engagement with Chinese philosophy or classical Chinese is welcome but not essential.Contact: andreas.kerschbaum@hu-berlin.de
