This course focuses on the socio-economic consequences of climate change. In detail, we will examine the adverse effects of climate change especially on economic activity, socioeconomic status, environmental and human health (e.g., measured in terms of economic growth, poverty, child mortality, living conditions, employment and income status, agricultural production etc.) We will analyse heterogeneous effects of climate change on the micro- and macro-level wrt individual characteristics (e.g., education) as well as across countries fighting against climate change (e.g., different income and growth levels).
The questions we will focus on are as follows: What are the causes and social and economic costs of global climate change? What are the social and economic damages from climate change on societies? How do we measure them? What are the impacts of current policies, and how are different countries addressing climate change?
There is a significant body of literature on climate impacts on GDP per capita, human health, poverty and crop yield.
