This course explores the intersections of language, gender, and sexuality, emphasizing how linguistic practices shape and are shaped by queer identities and communities. Through a combination of theoretical readings, empirical studies, and practical analysis, students will gain an understanding of how language functions in the construction of queer identities and the role of discourse in queer activism. Key topics include the historical context and emergence of Queer Linguistics, (hetero)normativity, gay speech, stereotyping, trans linguistics, and drag language. This seminar aims to provide a theoretical foundation but also to equip students with the skills necessary for conducting independent research in the field of Queer Linguistics.
