Yes, you will have to deal with climate change, global warming, energy transformation, forms of ecological violence in school – even if some people still attempt to deny the impending crisis. In this seminar we take a path through fiction to approach the topic. I would like to read three classical books of ecofiction with you: novels by Indra Sinha, Amitav Gosh, T.C. Boyle, and three works of young adult literature (I’m not sure Googins’ book is young adult literature – but perhaps something of the kind). We may drop one – depending on your time and energy – as I also want to introduce you to some theoretical texts on ecocriticism, which raises a lot of questions we need to discuss. Among them: Rob Nixon’s seminal book/chapter on “slow violence,” Dipesh Chakrabarty on the “Climate of History,” and Lawrence Buell on “Literature and the Environment.” We will talk about what we can use in the classroom, which concepts we might want to introduce in school, and how we can keep up hope without being hopelessly naïve.
Please start reading the books in the summer – it’s a lot to read!
The Moodle Key will be announced through Agnes (check the email with which you registered in Agnes).
