Human language and communication remain an evolutionary mystery. Why did only humans evolve such a complex system of communication? This course will explore theories of language evolution to understand the selection pressures that led to the emergence of our unique communicative system. We will examine the sociocognitive prerequisites that permitted humans to move beyond traditional means of primate communication. Lastly, we will discuss how language evolved on top of basic pragmatic and symbolic building blocks, giving rise to both verbal and non-verbal channels of communication.
