Kommentar

This course explores relationships between music and human bodies. Popular music will be centered, within a musically and intellectually eclectic framework. Topics and questions addressed in lectures will engage themes such as the following:

  • Conceptions of “the beat” in popular music and musicology, as both embodied and disembodied knowledge
  • Studies of dance and movement in popular-music contexts
  • Mind-body dualities in musical thought, and calls to dissolve these dichotomies
  • The ways in which musical bodies are seen, heard, and otherwise sensed
  • Communicative dimensions of popular-music bodies and movements
  • (Popular) music and disability
  • Voice and the popular-music body
  • Technological mediations of bodies in performance
  • Cognitive and material relationships between popular music and instruments
